NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK COMMENTARY: EDUCATION CHOICE SHOULD BE EMBRACED, NOT FEARED FROM REIMAGINED
“During Catholic Schools Week, and just a few days after we have wrapped up our celebration of National School Choice Week, we need to stop viewing choice as something to fear, but as an opportunity to focus on every child’s need to be well educated in whatever setting suits them best: district, private, charter, home, or something yet to be imagined. We also shouldn’t be afraid to redefine the terms of American education.”

CHARTER SCHOOL EXPANSION FACES TOUGH FIGHT IN NEW YORK BY TROY CLOSSON
“The governor’s proposal opens the possibility that the charter sector could expand its foothold in the nation’s largest school system. But charters, which have always faced fierce opposition from teachers’ unions and left-leaning Democrats, face a turbulent road ahead, as the city’s public school system grapples with the loss of thousands of students and some of the dollars that follow them. In New York City, ongoing fights over the sharing of school campuses with charters could further inflame the debate.
It remains unclear whether Ms. Hochul, who has not emphasized education issues since she took office in 2021, will prioritize charters during budget negotiations in which she and state legislators will contend with other hot-button issues, including New York’s bail laws.”

KEEPING THE FAITH STRATEGIC PLAN LAUNCHES TO STRENGTHEN SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT DIOCESE FROM THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND
“In a letter introducing the KTF plan, the bishop said he has a multi-pronged philosophy of Catholic schools:
We are called to missionary discipleship and the world needs what Catholic schools have to offer: integral development of the whole person and formation of persons who re fully alive in Christ being perfected in freedom and loving according to the Gospel.
We must cast out into the deep, leading with zeal and moving forward without fear to be proactive and strategic, embrace transparency, communicate the value of a Catholic education and offer appropriate support to the schools.
This is the responsibility of the entire Catholic community. The bishop said every parish would be associated with a school as part of its mission to evangelize the youth. However, that support will vary and would include more than just financial assistance. There are many opportunities to help support the schools, he added.
We are one body in Christ. The bishop said the Lord is calling us to act as one with him, using the diversity of gifts and talents each of us has received.”
